With great sadness, we announce the passing of Carmela Bianchi (née Montarulo) on April 21st, 2024 in Toronto, Ontario at eighty-eight years old. Forever cherished by her husband Antonio. Loved by her children Umberto (Angela) and Nancy (Vito). Proud Nonna of Michael (Alexandra), Alessandra (Paul), Anthony (Naomi), Emily (Scott) and her sweet great grandson Thomas.
She is predeceased by her siblings Francesco, Sergio, Nella & Angela. Carmela will be held dear in the hearts of her nieces, nephews, family & many friends.
Carmela was born in the town of Spinazzola, outside of Bari in Apulia, where she would meet the love of her life, Antonio. Soon after, they would be married and have their son Umberto. In 1964 she joined her husband in moving to Toronto, where they started a family auto body business which served the community for many decades. A few years following their move to Toronto, they had their daughter Nancy.
Over the years in Toronto, they built their forever home, and enjoyed many hobbies together — cooking, camping, sewing, travelling, playing card games, and going to the Casino — her favourite card game was Let it Ride.
She loved to dress up to attend social galas, and to throw dinner parties for her friends and family, all while helping to raise her four grandchildren — unless it was Friday, where she’d be at risk of missing her weekly hair appointment.
Carmela was full of life and energy, and those who knew her well would remark on her strength, ferocity and quick-wittedness.
In recent years, her health began to decline as she was diagnosed with dementia and ovarian cancer. Carmela fought right to the end while living at home with her husband and with the help of caregivers, drawing a parallel to the movie The Notebook.
Heartfelt thanks from her family go out to her caregivers — the Personal Support Workers, the staff at North York General Hospital, and especially to Juvy and her daughters who loved her from the moment they met her.
To know Carmela is to love her — she will truly be missed by all. May she rest in peace.
