It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Maria Gambino (nee Di Prisco), a beloved wife and mother, on November 29, 2023, in Toronto, ON, Canada. Born on February 27, 1935, in Fontanarosa, Avellino, Italy, Maria lived a life filled with love and dedication. Reunited with her beloved husband Angelo Raffaele and parents Romolo Di Prisco and Carmela Di Prisco (nee Cerundolo). Loving mother of Rita (George Spizzirri), Bruna (David Miller), Pina (Max Hansen) and Joe (Cathy LeDrew). Proud Nonna of Vanessa Marie, Alexander, Daniel David (Diandra Sladen), Mathew Andreas, Samantha, and Robert Raffaele. Dear sister of Michele (d. 2002) (Pamela), Renato (d. 1995) (Dot) and Mena (Domenico Di Minico d.2014).
Maria's primary focus in life was the care and well-being of her family. Maria was a strong and determined soul immigrating alone to Canada at 19 years old to begin a life with her beloved Angelo Raffaele (Raf) whom she married by proxy after a long-distance letter-writing courtship. Before coming to Canada, she apprenticed as a seamstress and her skillful hands could transform fabrics and threads into works of art. She could often be found at her sewing machine creating outfits for those she loved including wedding dresses for her daughters. Once her children were in school full-time, Maria took her sewing skills outside the home and for a time worked in the alterations department at Eaton’s. Her favourite job of all was as the local crossing guard where she adopted all the neighbourhood children, sharing stories and laughing with them as she guided them safely on their way.
Maria was adored by her family and friends and she shared a deep and loving bond with her husband Raf. Together they built a life rooted in mutual respect and unwavering support. Maria preferred to stay close to home where her adventures centered around home improvement projects and of course, her garden. Once Raf retired and they made the transition from Davenport to Concord, they expanded their garden and spent many happy hours together in the sunshine, though they kept busy in the off-season with preserving, tomato sauce, wine and sausage making. Maria was determined to stay in her beloved home even when she lost Raf after 53 years of marriage. Maria fought through many health challenges over the years even dealing with the amputation of her left leg in the last year of her life. Maria continued to adapt and work at everything she loved from her wheelchair where she still ruled her family with love and devotion.
Donations can be made in memory of Maria to the Heart and Stroke Foundation
